Key Points
-
This October hasn’t been as great for Bitcoin as its holders had hoped.
-
One month says nothing about the coin’s long-term performance potential.
-
There are still plenty of reasons to be bullish, including in the near term.
-
In the run-up to every October, there’s always some excited talk about the prospect of “Uptober” among crypto investors on social media. So the meme goes, October tends to exhibit a strongly bullish seasonality pattern across Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) and the crypto majors, and often among smaller altcoins as well. Bitcoin’s October record seems to solidly earn the Uptober label. It gained in 10 of 13 Octobers from 2013 through 2025, with a 12.7% median increase.
This time around, Bitcoin is sagging, with its price down 2% for the month as of Oct. 20. At least so far, that’s better than last year, when it lost 5% over the month amid a flash crash. Regardless of the mediocre first 20 days of the month, there are still three big reasons to stay bullish on this coin, and they’ll be in force for a lot longer than the next 30 days.

1. 73% of financial institutions planned to add crypto in 2026
In January 2026, Coinbase Global did its annual survey of 351 institutional investors, nearly all of which were at businesses managing over $1 billion in assets. Of those surveyed, 73% said that they planned to raise their digital asset allocations during the year. 91% planned to add to their Bitcoin allocations specifically.
What’s more, 75% reported that greater regulatory clarity would be the next major catalyst for the crypto industry. The legislative attempt at creating market structure rules for crypto, the Clarity Act, hasn’t been passed so far this year, and it probably won’t be. However, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) opened an early-stage rulemaking on Oct. 5, and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has a separate proposal out for comment.
If rules are finalized, that could give the institutional investors some of the confidence they need to allocate more of their capital to leading cryptoassets like Bitcoin as soon as next year.
2. Bitcoin’s next halving run-up window is right around the corner
As you probably know, Bitcoin’s halvings occur about every four years, and they determine how many new coins Bitcoin’s network issues to miners whenever a new block is mined. The next halving is estimated to occur on April 4, 2028, and it’ll cut the mining reward per block from today’s value of 3.125 BTC to 1.5625 BTC.
Historically, crypto investors know the predicted date of the halving, after which supply will be much harder to come by. That incentivizes them to buy it well ahead of that supply squeeze, and often shortly after it too.
Per Bitcoin Suisse, Bitcoin gained 380%, 141%, and 19% in the 12 months before the 2012, 2016, and 2020 halvings. If that dynamic repeats, and it likely will, the next run-up window will begin in approximately April 2027, which is about six months from now.
3. Whether or not there’s an “Uptober,” the coin’s price rises over the long run
Bitcoin’s performance in October doesn’t matter much if you’re investing with a long-term perspective.
On that front, Bitcoin’s price was higher three years after all 10 Octobers from 2013 through 2022. That’s a reason to be bullish. It’s also a big part of why I’m not concerned about my individual Bitcoin purchases not being at a favorable price point, as having some patience can make up for poor timing.
The same is very likely to be true for purchases made in the Octobers after that period too, as nothing about the coin’s fundamental properties has changed since then. Even the Bitcoin purchased at the all-time highs in October 2025 will probably eventually create a profit, assuming that the asset continues to behave in the same way it has year after year.
