Micron Technology (NASDAQ: MU) and Sandisk (NASDAQ: SNDK) are members of an elite club. Only four stocks in the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) have tripled or more so far in 2026. Micron and Sandisk make up half that group.
Sandisk has been the bigger winner by far this year. But that performance is water under the bridge. Which is the better memory stock to buy now?

Two different kinds of memory stocks
Micron and Sandisk are similar in some respects. However, they’re two very different kinds of memory stocks.
The most important difference between the two companies is the types of memory they focus on. Micron makes high-bandwidth memory (HBM), dynamic random access memory (DRAM), and NAND memory. Sandisk specializes in NAND flash memory.
HBM is Micron’s crown jewel these days. In the company’s fiscal 2026 fourth quarter, HBM revenue growth exceeded total revenue growth. Management said that it has completed sales agreements “for the vast majority” of its 2027 calendar-year HBM supply at significantly higher prices than it obtained in 2026.
Sandisk’s NAND flash focus has worked to its benefit, though. Surging NAND prices have allowed the company to capture the full upside without any dilution from memory chips that aren’t experiencing as strong demand.
But artificial intelligence (AI) serves as a massive tailwind for both companies. Memory is critical to AI applications. In particular, the shift to inference and the rising adoption of agentic AI are driving significant demand for multiple types of memory.
By the numbers: how Micron and Sandisk compare
Micron is much bigger than Sandisk. Its market cap tops $1 trillion, making Micron one of the world’s top 10 largest technology companies. Meanwhile, Sandisk’s market cap is around $200 billion.
Unsurprisingly, Micron also makes more money than Sandisk. In its latest quarter, Micron reported revenue of $54.2 billion and earnings of $37.7 billion. Sandisk’s revenue in its latest quarter was $8.97 billion, with earnings of $6.9 billion.
Both companies boast impressive growth. In its fiscal 2026 Q4, Sandisk’s revenue soared 372% year over year and 51% quarter over quarter. Micron’s fiscal Q4 revenue jumped 379% year over year and roughly 31% quarter over quarter.
Micron and Sandisk are cyclical stocks, which is reflected in their valuations. Micron’s shares trade at only seven times forward earnings, while Sandisk’s forward earnings multiple is 8x.
Wall Street likes both memory stocks, although the bullish views seem somewhat stronger for Micron. Of the 29 analysts who rated Micron over the past three months, 27 (93%) recommended buying the stock. The consensus 12-month price target for Micron reflects a potential upside of around 74%. Of the 17 analysts who rated Sandisk over the past three months, 15 (88%) recommended buying the stock. The average price target for Sandisk is roughly 60% above the current share price.
The verdict
Both Micron and Sandisk could (and probably will) continue to deliver exceptional returns over the next few years. But I think that Micron is the better memory stock overall.
While Sandisk’s pure-play NAND focus is its greatest strength, it’s also the company’s most significant risk. If NAND prices fall, Sandisk’s revenue and profits will sink. Micron faces risks, too, but its breadth across multiple types of memory should provide some cushion.
I also think that Micron could have a bigger long-term opportunity. In particular, I’m excited about the company’s prospects in the humanoid robotics market. Humanoid robots require enormous low-power memory. Micron is investing to meet expected demand and believes it will enjoy “a sustained, substantial multi-decade memory demand cycle” beginning later this decade.
My verdict aligns with Wall Street’s take on these two stocks. Micron is the better pick right now.
