Commercial-scale production is coming into focus
While QuantumScape doesn’t generate substantial revenue yet, the company reported its first customer billings under the agreement it announced in June with Honda, which focuses on integrating its solid-state platform into Honda’s technology.
In addition to progress with Honda, QuantumScape reported signing an agreement with a new automotive customer, the details of which will be announced on Nov. 11.
QuantumScape also announced the signing of a deal for a 100 megawatt-hour (MWh) capacity cell production line intended for markets beyond automotive, including artificial intelligence (AI) data centers, aerospace, and defense. Muehlbauer, a German automation and manufacturing technology specialist, is partnering with QuantumScape on the new production line and serves as an ecosystem provider of cell assembly equipment.
Engineering work on higher-throughput processes and equipment has already commenced, and the company is targeting 2028 for the start of production from the new line, which will represent the first commercial-scale mass production of QS cells.
Should investors charge up their holdings with QuantumScape stock now?
While QuantumScape stock initially rose in today’s trading, shares have since given back much of their gains. With the company making continued progress toward commercial production of its solid-state batteries, QuantumScape stock carries less risk than it did a few months ago. Nonetheless, the fact that the company is not yet generating substantial revenue means it remains fairly speculative, so investors should proceed cautiously.
